A little off the tourist circuit, the dynamic town of Borba, where marble extraction and wine production predominate, which in 2009 was promoted to city.
It keeps well cared for the signs of its past and the typical image of the Alentejo, making it a pleasant visit.
Highlights in Borba:
The castle, some churches and palaces, the extensive quarries and the Cooperative Cellar. Nearby, Évora and Vila Viçosa are the biggest tourist attractions.

The castle is Borba top image and the most prominent attraction in the town, dating back to the 14th century. Although only the keep and a few walls remain, it still offers a great view of the surrounding countryside.
São Bartolomeu
The church dates back to the 16th century and features a simple, whitewashed exterior and a traditional bell tower. The interior of the chapel is decorated with beautiful Baroque artwork, including a wooden altar and several paintings and sculptures, but the most interesting is the painted ceiling.
Pombal fountain
The Pombal Fountain is a beautiful and historic fountain located in the town’s main square, the Praça da República, that dates back to the 18th century and was built during the reign of King Joseph I of Portugal, whose minister was the Marquis of Pombal.
“Passos processionais”
The “Passos Processionais” is a religious event that takes place in Borba during Holy Week (common elsewhere with the name of Via Sacra). The event consists of a series of processions between chapels that reenact the Stations of the Cross, which depict the final moments of Jesus Christ’s life.
Via Sacra has 14 stations, Borba has 4 chapels. How does it work? You just have to go there in the Holy Week and let me know.
