The millennial Vila Viçosa grew and asserted itself from the 15th century onwards, when it came under the ownership of one of the most powerful families in Portugal – the Braganças.

When he came to power, the family moved to Lisbon, and the city became a holiday and leisure area.

Losing some projection, the village maintains the royal palace and many of the artistic investments sponsored by the family.
