Just 20 km from Ponta Delgada, it is the most important city on the north coast of the island. Dynamic and progressive city, it is not one of the biggest tourist attractions.
Highlights in Ribeira Grande:
Some museums and churches are interesting, as well as the Monte Verde beach. This is the biggest beach in the island, and with a good surf for sports. Also interesting is the Santa Luzia viewpoint.
Santa Bárbara beach
I´ve been twice in this beach, the first one in winter, with a rough sea, and the other in summer. It was a surprise, with sun and a calm sea, the almost emptiness of the beach, impossible in the continent.
We didn’t enter the water (“our” beach, in the southern coast seemed to be better), but it was a great aperitif for the best lunch in the island.
