Best time to visit
The best time to visit Porto Novo is between May and September, when warm temperatures and long days make the beach inviting for walks, sunbathing and ocean views. Summer brings brighter skies and livelier seaside moments, while spring and early autumn offer mild weather and quieter surroundings. Winter is dramatic and reflective, with strong waves and misty mornings that highlight the coastline’s raw character. Each season reveals a different mood, from calm summer afternoons to windswept winter solitude.
Getting around
Porto Novo is easy to explore on foot, with its beach, cliffs and viewpoints all within short walking distance. For reaching nearby towns such as Torres Vedras, Santa Cruz or Vimeiro, a car is the most convenient option. Roads are scenic and well maintained, passing through rural landscapes and coastal hills. Movement is relaxed and suits both slow exploration and broader itineraries along the Silver Coast.

Porto Novo is safe and welcoming, with a calm atmosphere typical of small coastal areas. Normal precautions are recommended, especially when swimming or walking near cliffs exposed to wind and waves. Visitors are encouraged to keep the beach clean, avoid disturbing wildlife and treat the environment with care. Politeness and simple greetings reflect the warm hospitality of the region.
Food and water
Food options near Porto Novo are modest, with small restaurants and cafés offering simple meals and snacks. For a wider variety of dining, Santa Cruz and Torres Vedras provide numerous restaurants serving fresh fish, seafood and regional dishes. The area’s cuisine reflects the flavors of the Oeste region, with emphasis on local produce and Atlantic ingredients. Drinking water is safe throughout the region. Meals tend to be relaxed and convivial, matching the coastal and authentic atmosphere of the area.

Porto Novo – 1st quick visit
Visiting Porto Novo beach
It was not our intention to go to the beach, just to observe an area of Torres Vedras coast, where we rarely go.
We were surprised by the natural beauty of this corner, the good tourist use, and the ease of access and parking resulting from its location in a sparsely populated area.
Given the proximity, we also visited the Vimeiro spa. Less than 5 km distant, it allows a pleasant walk in both senses, either visiting the pa while staying in the beach or vice-versa.
Vimeiro
The Vimeiro Spa has a long history that dates back to ancient Roman times when the therapeutic benefits of the local mineral-rich waters were first discovered. Over the centuries, the spa has been developed and modernized to provide various treatments and services to its guests.
The mineral waters of Vimeiro are believed to have beneficial effects on the skin, circulation, and overall well-being, however, in our visit we were surprised with unexpected signs of abandon and some degradation. Wrong impression? Maybe!
