Despite having more than 4,000-year-old traces, it was only in the 19th century that the city took on historical importance, when the Anglo-Portuguese allies created the defensive ring called the Linhas de Torres to protect Lisbon from French invasions.
The defense has worked, and some of the buildings and equipment have been preserved.
Highlights in Torres Vedras:
The castle, with the church of Santa Maria started to be built in the 12th century, the fort of São Vicente and some classified buildings.
