Portoroz beach

To see I choose Portoroz to sleep, in the way from Ljubljana to Italy, to know the so said “best beach” of Slovenia.

Well, as a beach…

We had a good dinner, and the landscape is nice, didn’t waste our time.

And I had a 30 seconds swim…

Portoroz was mentioned as the best Slovenian beach, and I was expecting something better. Of course it is developed, with hotels and restaurants everywhere, but the beach is poor.

As a matter of fact, beaches are artificial and private areas by the sea, here and there with small vestiges of sand.

I had a swim in one of those small pieces of sand (public area) with too many algae and a brownish water.

Well… I’ve seen better!

The “natural” beach of Portoroz is almost useless.

Sun seekers must book a chair in a private artificial area by the sea, and swimmers must dive from it. The sea is calm, the temperature in the water is good, but beach, for us, is a different thing. From there we went to Lignano Sabbiadoro – a “real beach” in Italy (I wrote about it, of course!)

The coast

If the main beach didn’t convince me at all, the sights of the coast were very beautiful.

The landscape is nice, and the steep coast allows many viewpoints of great beauty.

Travelling by car in the coast is a very positive experience if you forget parking difficulties.

A restaurant by the beach (also with its private beach) was chosen because it had on display four menu types two of them matching exactly the kind of dinner that we both wanted.

We were not disappointed. The food was great, well served, the ambiance was perfect, and the gentle service ended retributing the small tip that we gave with… a grappa. A good experience!

Maestral hotel
Maestral hotel

Positive impression Maestral – Not bad… nor good

With the rooms spreading in a few bungalows down the hill (and the main building occupied by a group of noisy Polish) this is a small hotel at a walking (but steep) distance from the beach.

The room was OK (far from the noise), breakfast was poor and served in strange conditions – half an hour before closing everything had been removed, and things came slowly and only by request, though with smiles and excuses.

The best thing was… free parking.

The polish used a bus, and their large occupation freed space in the parking were we could move at ease.

The price was below average, and… we had what we paid for.

The most outstanding building in Portoroz is… a hotel.

So interesting, that I had to read about it. It is now a modern hotel built recently (opened in 2008) but that, for historic reasons kept the former facade (and that’s its visual power). The original was built in 1910 to serve the high dignitaries of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. From 1983 to 1990 it was used as a cultural centre.

Don’t ask me about the hotel’s conditions, but if you have 200 € available you may check for yourself (low-season and room in the back)
