To see My preferences in Portalegre District:

** Very interesting in Portalegre district:
      Marvão
      Elvas
      Castelo de Vide
  * Interesting:
      Portalegre
      Campo Maior
      Belver
With time Alter do Chão, Amieira do Tejo, Ponte de Sor, Avis and Nisa

Amieira do Tejo

Amieira do Tejo
Portalegre district – Amieira do Tejo

Amieira do Tejo is a remote village that constituted an interesting detour, to visit a well-preserved castle and a chapel, on the banks of the Tagus River. A route named “Passadiços de Nisa” was recently opened on the banks of the river, which, after a suspension bridge, ends at the skywalk, a viewpoint over the Fratel dam. It is 3.6 km, which is generally done round trip, as the distance between ends, by car, is more than 12 km.

Avis

Avis
Portalegre district – Avis

Outside the major tourist circuits, the town of Avis, with a rich history, maintains a medieval layout in its historic center, and takes advantage of the Maranhão dam as a tourist complement.

Belver

Belver
Portalegre district – Belver

A beautiful corner, little known, Belver boasts its castle over the calm waters of the dam while on the opposite side, Alamal beach makes use of them with taste and efficiency.

Campo Maior

Campo Maior
Portalegre district – Campo Maior

Famous for its coffee production, Campo Maior is a well-organized traditional village, which periodically organizes a festival where, for a few days, the different streets compete in laborious and tasteful decorations.

Castelo de Vide

Castelo de Vide
Portalegre district – Castelo de Vide

A couple of times in Castelo de Vide, but only the last one with time to have a deep look at town.

It is small, rich in tradition, specially in connection with Jewish culture.

For a few years it became the regular location to one of the biggest dancing events in Portugal – Andanças.

Though facing the extreme heat of summer, that may be a great opportunity for a couple of days in town.

Elvas

Elvas
Portalegre district – Elvas

With an extensive collection of monuments classified as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Elvas is a city not to be missed.

Marvão

Marvão
Portalegre district – Marvão

There are two ways to appreciate Marvão – one of them entering the castle, enjoying its details, and the wide sights across border, showing that Portugal and Spain are only conventional designations for the same landscape.

The other one is from distance (for instance from Portagem, down the hill, in the way to Portalegre) with the castle topping the ridge, as a sentinel guarding the hills, where “progress” is the pretext to some visual offenses…

Why not mixing the two?
