Church
Construction began in 1172, the main church, dedicated to São João Batista, is a gem where the original Romanesque style was respected, with interventions over the centuries being limited to decorative elements, with frescoes and gilded altars.
Castle
What remains of the castle are just a few sections of the walls.
A staircase leads to their top, but there’s not much to see.
Casa do Castelo
At the end of the wall, the eagerness to take advantage of them led build a guests house, seeming to complement it, but ending with an artificial air.
Well… a good intention!
Carvalhos palace
About 300 meters from the church stands a palace that has been the subject of controversy because it is said that the Marquis of Pombal, famous for the reconstruction of Lisbon after the earthquake, was born there.
Controversy aside, the palace is beautiful, and as usual it was used as a hotel.
