The espigueiros are an important part of the cultural heritage of the area and have been designated as a National Monument.

The espigueiros date back to the 18th century and were built by local farmers to store their crops, primarily maize and other grains. The espigueiros are made of granite stone and are raised on pillars to keep the stored grain dry and safe from rodents.
