Visit to Belver
For many years I heard good references about this castle, but, being so far and away from any other featured destination, I always skipped it.
This year we took a large weekend to travel inland, and the detour to Belver was planned.
Well, the castle is as interesting as I knew, but also the site, mirroring in the calm water of the dam, is very beautiful.
Really a very nice detail in any trip in central Portugal!
Castle

It was the first castle constructed in Portugal by the Hospitallers, located by Tejo river, to stabilize the border between Christians and Muslims, in the 12th century. It was ruled by the religious order until the 14th century, and kept being used for defensive purposes with some adaptations, until the 18th century.
A strong earthquake in 1909 caused serious damages, but in 1939 the recuperation was started, and, with successive interventions, it was carefully recovered during 50 years.
It may be visited from Tuesday afternoon to Sunday, from 9.30 to 12.30 and 14.30 to 17.00, except in a few holidays, and between July 10th. and 17th
Dam

The dam was built between 1949 and 1954, with the primary function is to generate electricitybut the reservoir created by the dam also serves as a source of water for various purposes, including irrigation, industrial use, and public water supply.
Additionally, besides adding beauty to the views, it provides opportunities for recreational activities such as boating, fishing, and swimming.
Alamal beach

The Alamal River Beach is located in the reservoir, close to the Belver Dam, on the eastern bank of the Tagus River.
It offers a picturesque natural setting, with the river’s clear waters surrounded by lush green landscapes and it is known for its tranquility and natural beauty.
The beach has a sandy riverbank for sunbathing and picnicking, shaded areas provided by trees, and a designated swimming area. There are also lifeguards on duty during the summer months for safety and several water sports.
Castelo – Good end

Not in the plan, the detour to the beautiful village of Belver came as an alternative to dinner.
Not many restaurants, but this one was open in the 1st of May, and had good references.
The entrance is not very appealing, and the service started to look not very professional.
Everything changed, and it all ended surrounded by “tons” of excellent food, in a cordial, almost familiar ambiance, at a regular cost. Good!
