Newcastle in 2 calm days

I spent just one night in Newcastle, as a launching point to visit the Sunderland’s University. The weather was rather British, increasing the sensation of a sad and cold city. Wrong idea? Maybe!

The hotel was located in a very difficult place to find, but we had the chance of being helped by an Avis member. He just took the car we were leaving (15 minutes after closing time) and drove us to the hotel. What a nice guy!

A nice comercial gallery in the center, but… where is everybody?

Something lively, or almost.

City Centre

Newcastle

In an old fashioned city, the contrast is made by a neoclassical but lively city centre, with Grey street in evidence. It really differs from all the remaining city, that, I must confess, didn’t please me much.

Bridge

Newcastle

Built in 1926, this bridge was, at that time, with its 389 meters long, the longest single span bridge (162 meters).

It is not anymore, it is only the tenth higher structure in town, but it became a symbol of Tyneside, and a highlight in a city where there is not much to see.

St Nicholas

Started in the 11th century, this small cathedral got its final look in the 19th, with most of its elements coming from the 14th and 15th. The most remarkable detail is the top of the tower, a lantern tower built in the 15th century and longtime used to help the ships.

We needed to deliver a car to AVIS, and arrived in Newcastle almost at closing time.

Trying to find the hotel, even with a map, we didn’t succeed. With the time urging, we drove to the rent-a-car stand, but arrived 15 minutes late.

The employee was still there, and, gently, accepted the delivery out of time, and helped us finding the hotel, driving us there.

He invited us again to enter the car, and drove straight to the hotel’s door. It is in a secluded square, and that’s why, passing in the adjacent streets, we couldn’t find it. Later we noticed that the hotel is well identified in the top of the building, but, coming by car, it would be better a sign at street level.

Well, once inside, the hotel pleased us. It is a good mid price hotel, well located, and the service was efficient and nice.
