Loures – good support to Lisbon

”Saloios” are gone from Loures

When, in 1963, I moved to Lisbon, Loures was a village almost 10 miles away, where we rarely went, and usually just passing by.

With the disordered growth of Lisboa, this became a peripheral city, in practice almost a neighborhood at the edge of the city. Some commercial and service activities were transferred to the area, and Loures is today a city alive and with an urban image.

Loures – City Hall

Right in the center of Loures, a beautiful building houses the Town Hall. Despite many attempts I could not find any reference to the palace.

Eating in Loures - Salero

After a couple of years skipping it, Salero became to our family (living nearby) the natural first suggestion when we decide to eat out. Excellent food, mixing well creative and traditional recipes, good service, nice ambiance, and a moderate price, always combine to the full satisfaction after each visit.

If you need to eat north of Lisbon this is a perfect solution.

Affordable style

Ninety percent of the large properties belonging to the wealth people in the good old days were acquired by the state or dismantled to allow urban plans for mass building.

The few that remain depend on tourism to survive, merging the aristocratic image with a qualified service, either as a hotel or a restaurant.

This is the case of this restaurant, where we had the first (good) lunch of 2015.

Nice place, kind service, good food, and a reasonable price. It’s interesting to read the history of the place, as stated in their internet page.

Favorite Dish: We were seven, tasted several dishes and all of them were approved. “Broa de bacalhau” and “tornedó à casa” shared the first place.

Positive impression Casa Portuguesa

We needed a bed in Loures in New year’s Eve, and considering distance and price this seemed a good choice. It was!

Casa Portuguesa
Casa Portuguesa – Loures

This is more a motel than a hotel, with rooms spreading in a few buildings covering a hill, some constructions with an old look, some other looking more recent. Everywhere we saw signs of old neglected areas with undergoing works.

The general idea may be summarized in the expression “big ideas with small budget”. Easy parking, absolute tranquillity (no one working in the holiday), cheap price, in our room only the electricity needed urgent revision – no socket in toilet, only one in the room, and weak lights.

Nothing to celebrate, but we may repeat it if needed.
