To see Visiting Toledo

After a quick visit to Toledo, more than 40 years passed without going there. I recently repeated the visit, with such pleasure that, in a couple of years, there have been three visits.

Toledo is a gem that I never tire of, and where I will return whenever I can.

Puerta de Bisagra in Toledo

The Bisagra Door is situated in the northern part of the city, built in the 10th century during the Muslim rule and later expanded and renovated in the 16th century during the reign of Charles V.

Inside the Bisagra Door, there is a small chapel dedicated to the Virgin of the Sagrario, the patron saint of Toledo.

Santiago Mayor

Next to the door of Bisagra there is a church dedicated to Santiago that seems to have been built by a king of Portugal, Sancho II, who is buried there.

Built in the first half of the 13th century, the church replaced an old Muslim mosque, already consecrated to Santiago by Alfonso VI when he reconquered the city.

Virgen de la Estrella

The Church of Virgen de la Estrella is situated in the heart of Toledo’s historic center, near the Plaza de Zocodover. It is a medieval church that dates back to the 14th century, with subsequent additions and renovations carried out over the years.

Plaza Mayor

As usual in Spain, the Plaza Mayor in Toledo is a charming and picturesque square surrounded by beautiful buildings with traditional Spanish architecture, including arcades, balconies, and colorful facades. The square has a vibrant atmosphere and is often filled with people enjoying outdoor cafes, street performers, and local events.

Puerta del Sol

Located in the western part of the walls, the Gate of the Knights Hospitaller dates back to the 14th century and was built by that religious and military order. It consists of a large stone archway flanked by two towers. It is also known as Puerta del Sol.

Mirador Azor

The strategic position of the city allows for the existence of a plurality of viewpoints, over the city or from it.
Perhaps the best one to see the northern surroundings is this old lookout post, located next to the Puerta del Sol.

Cathedral

Construction of the Toledo Cathedral began in 1226 and continued over several centuries, incorporating elements from various architectural styles. The exterior features intricate stonework, towering spires, and ornate entrances. The interior is equally breathtaking, with soaring vaulted ceilings, intricate chapels, and stunning stained glass windows.

Inside the cathedral, you can find artistic treasures, including masterpieces by El Greco, Goya, and Van Dyck. The Main Altar and the choir stalls are also remarkable.

Additionally, the cathedral has a museum that displays a wide range of religious art and historical artifacts.

Ayuntamiento

The Toledo City Hall building is located in the historic center of the city, in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. It is a beautiful Renaissance-style building dating from the 17th century. Its façade stands out for its architectural beauty, with ornamental details and a central balcony from where different events and celebrations are held.

Eating in Toledo
Nino malo

In the most frequented area of Toledo, a square was completely occupied by an esplanade. There were several free tables, giving the idea that it would be easy to install our group of 7 people.

We discovered that there were 3 restaurants occupying the square, a row of tables for each one, none with the necessary spaces. We ended up opting for one of the three, Niño Malo, but inside.
We ate some reasonable pizzas, but with excessive delay in service and high prices for the type of restaurant.

I didn’t go into this hotel in the centre of Toledo, but I was impressed by the location and the magnificent visual setting. I went to check it out and found it to be a four star at a normal price.

To be considered, if parking (unavailable) is not a priority.
