Portel is one of the places where I pass several times, always saying to myself – one day I must stop and visit this with time.

Castle
With a very important role in our history, this castle was abandoned and ruined.
In 1910 it was officially declared a national monument, but that didn’t help, and degradation continued.
Finally, in 1999, it was recovered with traditional techniques.
Houses
Though not being amidst the most typical places in Alentejo, this town respects the essential of regional city planning and architecture – small white houses, some with blue details, line the streets descending from the castle.
