The castle of Idanha was built in the 13th century during the reign of King Sancho II, and it played an important role in defending the region against the Moors during the Reconquista.
With a rectangular shape and is surrounded by walls with several towers, it is, today, severely ruined.
The Church of Santa Maria or the Church of Mercy, is located in the historic center of the town. It was built in the 16th century and has a Manueline-style facade with intricate carvings and sculptures. The church has a single nave with a beautiful altarpiece in gilt wood from the 18th century.
