Belmonte – A “Jewish” village

Well inland, in the remote central Portugal, this village was the refuge of many Jews in the “bad old days”.
Some signs do remain, in a well integrated community.

The Castle

Home town of Pedro Alvares Cabral, the discoverer of Brazil, this modest small city still keeps signs of the family.
The castle is from the 13th century, with some Manueline details.
St Anthony and Calvary chapels

Close to the castle there are two small chapels – St Anthony, very old, maybe from the 11th or 12th century.
The other one, Calvary chapel, also very modest comes from the 19 century.
