Plaza Mayor of Plasencia

Plaza Mayor is a beautiful and historic square that dates back to the 15th century and is considered one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in the region of Extremadura.

The square is surrounded by impressive buildings, with evidence to Town Hall, showcasing a beautiful mix of architectural styles, including Gothic and Plateresque.

Old cathedral

The Cathedral of Santa María is a grand Gothic-Romanesque structure located in the old town, whose construction began in the 13th century and continued for several centuries, resulting in a mix of architectural styles. It was replaced by a new one two centuries later.

Part of the former Santa María convent, underwent renovations to transform it into a cultural space. The Santa María Cultural Center aims to promote and host various cultural activities, including exhibitions, concerts, theater performances, conferences, and workshops.

Mirabel palace

The Mirabel palace dates back to the 15th century and is a fine example of Renaissance architecture. It was originally built as a noble residence for the Marquis of Mirabel.

Today, it serves as the headquarters of the Municipal Tourism Office.

São Nicolau

The Church of San Nicolás is a heavy building dating back to the 15th century and showing a combination of architectural styles, including Gothic and Renaissance influences.

Inside the church, we may admire the impressive altarpiece, which is a remarkable example of Spanish Renaissance art and is dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Bari.

“Dos Torres” house

The exact origins and history of the Casa de las Dos Torres are not widely documented, but it is believed to date back to the 15th century. It has undergone renovations and modifications over the years and that may be a reason why it seems more Italian than Spanish at my eyes..

Walls of Plasencia

The walls are remarkably well-preserved and consist of a series of stone ramparts, towers, and gates that encircle the old town. The walls are interspersed with defensive towers, some of which are accessible and offer panoramic views of the city and its surroundings.

Trujillo door

The main entrance points through the walls are marked by impressive gates, including the Puerta de Trujillo, Puerta del Sol, the Puerta de Coria, and the Puerta Berrozana.

Plasencia Aqueduct

Aqueduct for some, bridge for others, this set of arches, known as Arcos de San Anton seems to have been built in the 14th or 16th century, depending on the version, and only an extension of about 300 meters remains.
