Overview
Lausanne is one of Switzerland’s most elegant and vibrant cities, set on the northern shores of Lake Geneva and built across steep hills that offer constant views of water and mountains. Known for its lakeside promenades, cultural institutions, and the Olympic Museum, Lausanne blends Swiss precision with a relaxed lakeside atmosphere. It’s a city of terraces, parks, and historic streets, ideal for slow exploration and scenic moments.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Lausanne is from May to September, when the weather is warm and perfect for lakeside walks, outdoor cafés, and exploring the old town. Spring and early autumn offer mild temperatures and fewer crowds. Winter is crisp and atmospheric, with Christmas markets, lake mist, and easy access to nearby ski areas.
Getting Around
Lausanne is compact but hilly. The city has an efficient public transport system, including buses and Switzerland’s only metro outside Geneva. Walking is ideal for exploring the old town, Ouchy, and parks, though some areas involve steep climbs. Renting a car is unnecessary — public transport is reliable and parking can be limited.
Safety and Local Etiquette
Lausanne is safe, clean, and welcoming. Respect quiet residential streets, lakeside areas, and public transport etiquette. Locals appreciate politeness, punctuality, and care for the environment — recycling and cleanliness are taken seriously. Tap water is excellent and widely consumed.
Food and Water
Lausanne’s cuisine blends Swiss traditions with international influences. Expect fondue, raclette, lake fish, artisan bakeries, and excellent wines from the nearby Lavaux vineyards. Tap water is safe and high‑quality. Restaurants and cafés are concentrated in Ouchy, Flon, the old town, and along the lakefront.
Day Trips and Excursions
Lausanne is perfectly located for exploring Lake Geneva and the Vaud region. Popular excursions include:
- Montreux — lakeside promenades and views of the Alps.
- Lavaux Vineyards — UNESCO terraced vineyards overlooking the lake.
- Vevey — charming town with museums and waterfront walks.
- Chillon Castle — iconic medieval fortress on the lake.
- Gruyères — cheese heritage, castle, and mountain scenery.
For longer trips, you can reach Geneva, Bern, or Zermatt.

It’s a city where culture meets nature, where lakeside calm balances urban energy, and where every walk reveals a new perspective. Lausanne – passing by

Just passing by Lausanne
It was just a glimpse, in a quick passing by.
We loved the calm look and ambiance (with the funny detail that half of the people in a garden where we stopped to rest some minutes was speaking… Portuguese).
Anyway… it needs another visit.
