Guide to Canary Islands – Overview

The Canary Islands are a diverse Atlantic archipelago where volcanic landscapes, golden beaches, lush forests, and year‑round sunshine come together. Each island has its own identity — from Tenerife’s dramatic peaks to Lanzarote’s lunar terrain, Gran Canaria’s dunes, La Palma’s forests, and Fuerteventura’s endless beaches. The archipelago blends nature, culture, and outdoor adventure, making it one of Europe’s most versatile destinations.

Best Time to Visit

The Canary Islands are a year‑round destination, thanks to their mild subtropical climate. The best months for beach holidays are April to October, while November to March offers perfect conditions for hiking, road trips, and exploring volcanic landscapes. Summer is warm but rarely extreme, and winter remains sunny and pleasant.

Getting Around

Each island has its own transport network. Buses connect major towns, but renting a car is the most convenient way to explore beaches, viewpoints, and natural parks. Inter‑island travel is easy via ferries and short domestic flights. Urban areas like Las Palmas and Santa Cruz are walkable and well served by public transport.

Safety and Local Etiquette

The Canary Islands are safe and welcoming. Sun exposure can be intense — sunscreen and hydration are essential. In volcanic and mountainous areas, weather can change quickly; proper footwear is recommended. Respect protected natural parks, beaches, and quiet rural villages. Locals appreciate politeness, calm behavior, and support for small businesses.

Food and Water

Canarian cuisine blends Spanish traditions with island flavors. Expect papas arrugadas, mojo sauces, fresh fish, gofio, and excellent local wines. Tap water is safe to drink, though many visitors prefer bottled water for taste. Restaurants and cafés are concentrated in coastal towns, resorts, and historic centers.

Day Trips and Excursions

The Canary Islands offer endless excursions depending on the island you choose. Highlights include:

  • Tenerife — Teide National Park, Anaga Forest, black‑sand beaches, and vibrant Santa Cruz.
  • Gran Canaria — Maspalomas dunes, Roque Nublo, and charming mountain villages.
  • Lanzarote — Timanfaya National Park, volcanic vineyards, and César Manrique’s architecture.

  • La Palma — Caldera de Taburiente, star‑gazing, and lush forests.
  • La Gomera — Garajonay National Park and quiet rural landscapes.

It’s a place where nature dominates, where every island tells a different story, and where the rhythm is relaxed and sunlit. The essence of the Canaries lies in their contrasts: wild landscapes and gentle climates, quiet villages and lively resorts, making them one of Europe’s most unique and endlessly surprising destinations.

After the disappointment due to a arid island, when we expected a tropical vegetation, we started to appreciate the Spanish professionalism to transform sun in tourism.

Canariy islands are a hard job, with a reasonable success., at least in the two islands that we visited – Gran Canaria and Tenerife

We spent a week in Gran Canaria in Playa de lngles, close to Maspalomas.

Renting a car, we made the tour of the island, visiting, Las Palmas Mogan, and Puerto de Mogan.

Travelling with children we couldn’t miss Palmitos and Sioux City parks.

However, beach dominated the vacation

Visiting Tenerife

Tenerife – The Best Of Canary Islands Highlights

After a week in Gran Canaria, we moved to playa de las Americas, in Tenerife.

The same arid landscape, but with little differences, with evidence to the green Orotava valley, the beauty city of Puerto de la Cruz, or the dramatic ascent to Teide.

Not bad, but to be honest, once seen… its seen!
