Highlights in Reus:
Indeed, the town does not feature any of Gaudí’s works but showcases a rich modernist heritage through its stunning architecture. Visitors can admire landmarks such as Casa Navàs, Casa Rull, and Casa Gasull, reflecting the creative spirit of the era. The historical center of town offers quaint streets, lively plazas, and vibrant cultural activities. Plaça Mercadal, a central square, is a hub of activity, surrounded by cafes and shops. Additionally, if we don’t have work we have the Gaudí Centre to better know him.
Reus – Nice 1st visit
Casa Navas
Staying in a beach nearby, to visit Reus was almost mandatory. It was a short visit, Bur detailed enough to see all the Reus highlights.
Designed by one of the most famous names in Spanish modernism – Lluis Domenech I Montaner – it is the ex-libris of the city, and one of the best-preserved modernist examples in the world.
Completed between 1901 and 1908, Casa Navàs features intricate stone carvings, ornamental details, and a prominent corner balcony and it is, for sure, the best of Reus.
Market square
Plaza del Mercadal, also known as Market Square, is the vibrant center of Reus. Surrounded by notable buildings such as the Casa Navàs and the City Hall, Plaza del Mercadal is a blend of historical charm and modern activity. The square hosts various cultural events, festivals, and markets throughout the year, attracting both locals and tourists.
Prim square
General Juan Prim y Prats gave its name to the central square of the city, and also the most beautiful one. In the center there’s a sculpture of the military.
“Dispensário” by Rubio
The Dispensario Antituberculoso de Reus, designed by architect Joan Rubió i Bellver, is a notable example of early 20th-century architecture. Completed in 1928, this building was part of a broader public health initiative to combat tuberculosis in the region.
Sant Joan church
The Sant Joan Church, still in religious use, was constructed between 1911 and 1931, showcasing a blend of Gothic and modernist styles. Its impressive facade features intricate stone carvings and a large rose window, while the interior is adorned with beautiful stained-glass windows and detailed altarpieces.
Casa Rull
This is another example of Modernist architecture, designed by the renowned architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. Completed in 1900, this building features a distinctive facade with intricate stone carvings, Gothic-inspired windows, and a prominent corner balcony adorned with floral decorations. The use of brick, typically reserved for industrial buildings, adds a unique touch to its residential design. The house is now owned by the City Council of Reus and houses the Institute of Cultural Action.
Escola Prat de la Riba
Another very beautiful building where red brick prevails is this school with very diverse activities. I was unable to find information about the origin of the building.
Caixa de Pensions
The Caixa de Pensions building is a notable example of Noucentisme architecture, designed by Enric Sagnier i Villavecchia and completed in 1929. Located at Plaça del Pintor Fortuny, this historic building originally served as a savings bank and residential apartments. Its design features a distinctive convex facade, highlighted by Corinthian columns and sculptural reliefs by Eusebi Arnau, symbolizing the ideals of savings and prosperity.
Prioral de San Père
The Prioral de Sant Père is a historic Gothic church, originally built in the 16th century. It is dedicated to Saint Peter, the patron saint of the city.
Institut Pere Mata
There is no doubt that Lluís Domènech i Montaner, in addition to working well, worked hard, and one of his many excellent jobs is located on the outskirts of town.
Institut Pere Mata in Reus is a renowned psychiatric hospital, constructed between 1897 and 1912, and a prime example of his Catalan Modernisme. The complex consists of several pavilions, each showcasing intricate architectural details and innovative design. The most notable pavilion, the Pavelló dels Distingits, features stunning stained-glass windows, elaborate tile work, and ornate ironwork.
