Visiting Ciudad Real – Plaza Mayor

Plaza Mayor is the vibrant heart of the city, located in the historic center of Ciudad Real. Founded in the 13th century, the square is surrounded by historic buildings, including the Casa del Arco, City Hall and the statue of Alfonso X, the Wise, the city’s founder, as a central attraction.
Ayuntamiento

The Ayuntamiento of Ciudad Real is the most prominent building located in Plaza Mayor. It has a very strange look, combining traditional and contemporary elements, creating an interesting and inviting environment. Large and modern windows on the ground floor challenge the neo-gothic look of the other floors, topped by a very uncommon and a clock tower.
Clock

The “Casa del Arco features a carillon clock with automaton figures of Don Quixote, Sancho Panza, and Miguel de Cervantes that come out frequently during the day. This historic building once served as the seat of local government from the 15th to the 18th century, but the carillon was installed in 2005.
Cathedral

The Cathedral of Ciudad Real, officially known as the Holy Priory Church Cathedral-Basilica of the Military Orders of Our Lady Saint Mary of the Prado, is a stunning example of Gothic architecture with elements of Romanesque, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. Construction began in the 15th century and continued into the 16th century. I read that the cathedral features a massive nave, with a beautiful main altarpiece in Renaissance style, and with Baroque furnishings and paintings in the sacristy, but I was there on Sunday, during religious ceremony, and decided to respect it.
Cultural center

The Old Gran Casino of Ciudad Real, inaugurated in 1887, is a historic building located in the Prado Gardens, featuring beautiful moldings and art deco lamps, reflecting its elegant past. Today, it functions as a cultural center, hosting various events such as concerts, exhibitions, and conferences. The interior includes several rooms like the Carlos Vázquez Room, used for smaller gatherings and presentations and the Dance Room, which can accommodate up to 200 people, and where we would like to dance.
San Pedro church

San Pedro Church in Ciudad Real is a Gothic masterpiece dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries. This historic church features three naves with ribbed vaults, separated by massive pillars, and a polygonal apse. The church is renowned for its three distinctive doors: the Puerta del Perdón, Puerta de Umbría, and Puerta del Sol, all closed when we passed there.
Plaza del Pilar

Our hotel was located in Plaza del Pilar, a vibrant public square with a rich history. Originally known as Plazuela del Pilar, it featured a well and a livestock trough, reflecting its agricultural roots. Over time, it evolved into a central urban space, undergoing several transformations. Today, the plaza is a lively spot surrounded by shops, cafes, and restaurants, making it a popular gathering place for locals and visitors alike.
Statues

The tourist map available at the entrance of our hotel, recommended three routes, one of them the statues rora. We didn’t have time to follow it, but still gave the Don Quixote.
The statue of Don Quixote, created by local sculptor Joaquín García Donaire, is the central element of the pleasant square.
Recinto La Granja

Recinto La Granja in Ciudad Real is a versatile venue known for hosting a variety of events, including markets, fairs, and cultural activities. This spacious area is well-equipped to accommodate large gatherings, offering ample space for vendors and visitors alike. On Saturdays it shelters the city market, but at the time we got everything was finished, and we could only see it on the outside.
