Visiting Zamora
Visiting Marina Española Park
In a densely built up area, where there is not much greenery, this park is large and pleasant, and was the best parking solution we found for visiting the city.
Constitucion
The Plaza Constitución is one of the largest squares in Zamora and is known for its historic architecture and notable buildings, such as the Town Hall, the San Juan de Puerta Nueva church, the Palacio de los Momos, and the Post Office building.
The square is the scene of numerous events and celebrations, such as the San Pedro and San Pablo Fair, which takes place in June.
Santa Clara
The Monastery of Santa Clara was founded in the 13th century by Queen Eleanor de Plantagenet, wife of Ferdinand III the Saint, and is located in the historic center of the city.
The monastery has an impressive 14th-century Gothic cloister, as well as a church in the same style that was built in the 15th century. There is also a museum inside the monastery and currently, it is inhabited by a community of Poor Clare nuns.
Plaza Mayor
The Plaza Mayor in Zamora is an arcaded square, surrounded by historic buildings, such as the Old Town Hall, the Ramos Carrión Theater and the Torre del Homenaje. In the center of the square is a granite fountain, which was installed in the 19th century.
Ayuntamiento viejo
The Old Town Hall of Zamora is a historic building located in the Plaza Mayor of the city. It is a Renaissance palace built in the 16th century, which has been used as the city hall at different times.
It is not used anymore but inside, you can visit different rooms and spaces that preserve the original decoration and furniture, such as the Mayor’s Room, the Plenary Hall or the Reception Room.
San Juan church
The Church of San Juan de Puerta Nueva was built at the end of the 11th century and beginning of the 12th, in Romanesque style, on the remains of an old Visigothic temple.
The façade stands out for its main door, a Romanesque masterpiece, and in the interior, in the Gothic style, you can see different artistic treasures.
La Leña
La Leña is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city and retains great charm and a special atmosphere.
The name of the neighborhood comes from the ancient activity of manufacturing and selling firewood, which took place in the area in the Middle Ages. The most outstanding places in the neighborhood are the Plaza de la Leña, and the Church of San Cipriano.
Santa Maria de la Horta
The church of Santa María de la Horta was built in the 13th century, in the Romanesque style, and has undergone different transformations and reforms over the centuries.
The interior is Gothic in style, with a central nave and several side chapels.
Viriato
Viriato is a legendary figure in the history of Portugal (Spain also?), especially known for having led the resistance of the Lusitanians against the Roman invasion in the 2nd century BC. It seems that there is no evidence to prove that Viriato had any relationship with the city of Zamora, but it was nice to meet him there.
Maria Magdalena
The Santa María Magdalena is a Romanesque church dating back to the 12th century. IT features Romanesque work on the exterior, and tombs and a plain carved sepulcher on the interior.
San Ildefonso
San Pedro y San Ildefonso is a beautiful medieval church located in Zamora, known for its impressive collection of relics from both St. Peter and St. Ildefonso.
Troncoso mirador
This is a popular scenic viewpoint in Zamora, located near the tourism office, offering a beautiful view of the Douro river and the Puente de Piedra bridge.
Cathedral
The Cathedral is a stunning example of Spanish Romanesque architecture, built between 1151 and 1174. It has a Museum with fine Flemish tapestries of the 15th–17th centuries.
Castle
The Castle of Zamora is a fortress built in the mid-11th century, protected by a deep moat, reached by a bridge, and is surrounded by a Castle Park. It is an important historical and cultural landmark, having received the highest protection in the Spanish Historical Heritage in 1931.
