My São Pedro do Sul

If it happens to you like me – you arrive in São Pedro do Sul, ignoring that the spas are 5 km away, don’t rush out. Take a walk around the city, which has character and some interesting buildings.
Reriz Palace

Visiting São Pedro do Sul, Among the things that impressed me most during my quick tour of the city, this palace stands out.
Its construction seems to date back to 1715, when D. Diogo Francisco de Azevedo de Almeida e Vasconcelos, one of the founders of the Real Companhia de Vinhos do Alto Douro, ordered it to be built as his family’s home.
The internal courtyard gives access to the gardens of the palace, which was also the Royal Palace, during the various stays of Queen D. Amélia and the Royal Princes at Termas de S. Pedro do Sul.
Then… the hot springs, of course, but calmly, as is required in spas.
The Spa of S. Pedro do Sul

Comprising two spas—Balneário Rainha D. Amelia and Balneário D. Afonso Henriques—it offers modern features for relaxation and well-being. With over two thousand years of history, it’s Portugal’s largest spa and one of Europe’s finest. Distinguished doctors recommend its medicinal waters, and clients return annually for the remarkable progress achieved. The Grande Hotel Thermas Nature & SPA, established in 1919, also contributes to this legacy.
Fountain

A fountain was placed in front of the Rainha Dona Amélia bathhouse, where highly sulfurous water flows at more than 60º. It is a modern sculpture, of which I found no references.
The small city

As a tourist attraction, around the resorts a small village was created that provides essential services and products, reflecting the modernity and simplicity of its origins.
Gardens

There isn’t much to do in the city, and the clientele attracted to the spas is mostly seniors, so relaxation is the watchword. The center of the town is occupied by a leafy garden where you want to take a stroll, and where relaxation is effortless.
Inatel

The most beautiful building is the palace of INATEL, a foundation that aims to support workers’ free time. Its palace is a thermal resort offering absolute tranquility, harmonizing classic architecture with modern interiors. The 77 fully equipped rooms feature warm colors and contemporary furnishings. From cozy lounges to the grand dining room reminiscent of a ballroom, the windows frame breathtaking views of the lush Vouga River and the Roman bridge. The hotel’s garden, including an outdoor pool, invites relaxation. The restaurant serves a diverse menu, blending Portuguese delicacies with international dishes.
