Visiting Lamego – Cathedral

Cathedral – Lamego Top Monument

The cathedral of Lamego was built in the 12th century, in the location of a former church, in Romanesque style.

Successive adding transformed it, and only the bell tower remains from the original.

During the Late Middle Ages, the building was enriched with numerous elements, and at the beginning of the 15th century underwent an important renovation, the most visible result of which was the front, with important Manueline work.

In the Modern Age, it continued to be enlarged and enriched with other works, namely the Mannerist cloister and the Baroque new chancel and transept.

Interestingly, a part of the complex appears to have been opened up for residential and commercial use. Anyone who knows how and why… tell.

Sanctuary – The Best Of Lamego Highlights

From the end of the main avenue, an imposing baroque staircase with 686 steps goes up to the top of a hill, leading to a rocaille sanctuary, erected in the mid-19th century.

The staircase is richly decorated and the famous Nicolau Nasoni designed the beautiful granite fountain that is located next to the Sanctuary.

Also known as Solar dos Castros, this house was built in 1777 with the reuse of previous structures, well combined, making one of the most outstanding civil buildings in town.

In the central body is the gate, in granite work, surmounted by the coat of arms.

There’s a garden, with geometric flower beds and a small fountain.

The most notable building around the Jardim da República is the City Council Palace, inaugurated in 1855 to replace the precarious installation in the castle.

It is an unpretentious building that stands out for its size and austere appearance.
