Meixedo and Provesende

Overview

Meixedo and Provesende are two quiet rural villages in the Vila Real district, shaped by the green slopes of the Douro region and the calm rhythm of inland Portugal. They reflect the authenticity of Trás‑os‑Montes, where stone houses, agricultural fields and gentle hills create an atmosphere of simplicity and tradition. Provesende, one of the historic villages of the Douro, preserves manor houses, narrow streets and echoes of wine‑growing heritage, while Meixedo offers a more intimate rural identity, defined by everyday life and close community ties. Together, they form a landscape where nature, heritage and silence coexist in harmony.

Passing by Meixedo

Meixedo
Just Passing By Meixedo

Until I passed through this village in my way to Montalegre, I had never heard its name. I made a photo, and when I searched for references, I was surprised to find no less than three villages in Portugal with this uncommon name – one in Viana do Castelo, another in Tarouca, and… this one in Montalegre.
Which is the least interesting?
I will reply after discovering the other two (supposing that I will find them), but, reading I found that there were some administrative aggregations that indicate the progressive disappearance of some villages in the interior.

Right in the center of the small village there is also a small bar, which advertises the sale of handicrafts, and assumes itself as a museum.
Curiosities of the small and forgotten villages awakened by the opportunity called “tourism”.
