Portagem means “Toll” and a legend says that the name came from the Jews expelled from Spain, who paid the toll to cross the old bridge to Portugal, that still exists there.
Nowadays, even the border with Spain has been crossed, and the village has become just a crossing point, at the feet of Marvão.
Passing by and stopping, as the image of Marvão seen from the foot of the hill is impressive, and invites you to climb.
Portagem Highlights:
Marvão at the top, and Spain on the side, or Castelo de Vide for those going in the opposite direction.
