Campo Maior

Campo Maior

Located next to the border with Spain, and disputed between both countries until becoming definitively Portuguese, Campo Maior is a city that became known mainly through coffee.

Not that it is a producer, but a skilful use of cross-border business allowed the development of the roasting industry, creating one of the largest European producers.

However, the city has a lot to show for its typical Alentejo image.

Highlights in Campo Maior:

The castle, the parish church, the village gate, the coffee science center and some small museums.
Every 4 years, the city’s festivals are unmissable.
