Overview
Santa Rita is a long, open beach located in a sparsely populated coastal area, where nature dominates the landscape. Just a short walk from the Vimeiro Thermal Spa and directly connected to Porto Novo Beach, it offers two distinct environments: a northern section with organized facilities and a southern stretch that remains almost completely wild. The beach is known for its strong waves, wide horizon, and peaceful atmosphere, making it a favorite among surfers and visitors seeking space and tranquility.
Best Time to Visit
The best months to enjoy Santa Rita are May to September, when the weather is warm and ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and coastal walks. Spring and early autumn offer milder temperatures and fewer visitors, while winter brings dramatic seas and a quieter, more contemplative environment.
Getting Around
Santa Rita is easy to explore on foot, with walkways connecting the beach to the Vimeiro spa area. To visit nearby beaches, cliffs, or the town of Torres Vedras, a car is the most practical option. Parking is generally available, especially outside peak summer.
Safety and Local Etiquette
The beach is safe, but the waves can be strong, especially for inexperienced swimmers. Surfers and bodyboarders should respect local etiquette and wave priority. As the southern area is more isolated, caution is recommended when walking on the rocks or during high tide. Keeping the beach clean is part of local culture and appreciated by residents.
Food and Water
Tap water is safe and excellent. Santa Rita has a few seasonal cafés and beach bars, while nearby villages and the Vimeiro area offer additional dining options. Fresh fish, seafood, and traditional Portuguese dishes are common in the region.

It was not our intention to go to the beach, just to observe an area of the coast where we rarely go.
This long and good looking beach was a real surprise, since we had no memories of it.
It seems a recent use of a wild beach, that brings to it the essential conditions, without spoiling the overall look.
Given the proximity, we also visited the Vimeiro spa and Porto Novo, in the other side of the small promontory.
