In the mid-14th century, Portugal was on the verge of losing its sovereignty in favor of the Spaniards. In Aljubarrota, a much smaller Portuguese army achieved a resounding victory, which led the king to order the construction of a commemorative monument on the site.
The monastery of Batalha is one of the wonders of Portugal, in a perfect combination of Flemish and Portuguese Gothic, with Manueline decorations.
Around it, a village was born that venerates the monastery and supports tourism.
Highlights in Batalha:
The monastery is unmissable, taking special care not to miss the Capelas Imperfeitas, with a separate entrance.
