The best time to visit Arraiolos is from April to October, when warm temperatures and clear skies make walking and sightseeing comfortable. Spring brings soft colours and blooming fields. Summer offers bright light and lively days in the town square. Early autumn provides golden tones and a calmer rhythm. Winter is cool and tranquil, ideal for cultural visits and reflective travel through the Alentejo.
Getting around
Arraiolos is compact and easy to explore on foot, with the castle, museum and central streets all within short distances. Walking allows travellers to appreciate the town’s architecture and views over the surrounding countryside. For reaching Évora or nearby villages, a car provides flexibility and comfort. Roads are scenic and well maintained, following the gentle contours of the Alentejo landscape.

The Castle is a medieval fortress that dates back to the 13th century, the historic center is nice, with the church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção.
Tapestry is the landmark of town, and you may explore the Tapestry Museum and several shops. Nearby, the Cromeleque dos Almendres is a prehistoric stone circle believed to be over 7,000 years old and one of the largest in Europe.

- Summer (June to August) — hot and generally dry, with temperatures typically ranging between 30°C and 40°C. Heatwaves may occasionally occur during peak summer.
- Autumn (September to November) — comfortable weather, harvest season, and excellent conditions for cultural visits, photography, and gastronomy.
- Winter (December to February) — mild conditions, generally ranging between 5°C and 15°C, with occasional rainfall and cool mornings.
Spring and autumn are widely considered the best seasons to visit Arraiolos and discover the landscapes and traditions of the Alentejo.

True Alentejo
Famous by their special tapestry, Arraiolos is a small city where I passed a dozen times without stopping.
This time I took a day to GO THERE, and visit the place.
It was embellished to the event “Tapetes na rua” (tapestry in the streets), but the true image of Alentejo was honestly present everywhere. It was a nice day, where I think that I saw the best of Arraiolos that I will describe in this page.
Misericórdia church
In the centre of town, this small church is a mandatory visit – its rich interior joins to the gilded altar and the rich tiles from the 18th century that cover the walls, a ceiling that reminds the image of the tapestries that are the city’s ex-libris.
The pillory
The pillory, common detail in most Portuguese villages in the middle ages, is interesting, with its twisted shape, and conserving the four arms in iron. It is located in the central square.
The castle
With construction beginning in the 12th century, the castle is one of the rare examples of a circular plan in the world.
It was inhabited until the end of the 16th century, after which, with one or another isolated intervention, it faced a long period of degradation and ruin.
After some restoration work in the mid-20th century, it is now a very pleasant space to visit, with excellent views over the city and beyond.
Nossa Senhora do Castelo church
The Church of Nossa Senhora do Castelo, situated at the highest point of Mount S. Pedro, within the castle, dates back to the medieval period. Originally serving as the Mother Church of Arraiolos, it has been preserved better than some parts of the castle walls.
Clock tower
One of the castle’s curiosities is the so-called clock tower.
Enriched with a dome during the time of D. Manuel (1495-1521), it appears to be one of the turrets of the old barbican gate, the other being the large keep. If you have a watch, I didn’t see it…
Interpretation center
CITA is a museum space with permanent and temporary exhibitions, with the aim of promoting the study and dissemination of the internationally famous Arraiolos Carpet.
City hall
As expected, the most distinctive building in the main square is the City Hall. With simplicity and good taste, it represents the traditional architecture of the region.
The court
Even more interesting in this main square is the building that closes it, the courthouse. Small, modest and with the same traditional image, it highlights the detail of a bell tower, which, at first glance, makes it look like a church. A perfect image of Alentejo is given by the group of men, sitting in the shadow of justice, contemplating the immense carpet in front of them.
The centre of town
On a scorching summer day, it was pleasant to stroll through the town center. The narrow, shady streets, some closed to traffic, gave an overall image of authenticity and freshness, complemented by the richness of the carpets visible everywhere. I was experiencing the usual carpet festival then, so I don’t know if day to day life will be much poorer, but what I saw was very pleasant.
Band stand
As in many other villages, the center of a square is occupied by a bandstand. Curious, in this case, the unprecedented tile decoration for me.
Main church
The main church in Arraiolos dates back to the 16th century. It features a simple yet elegant design, typical of Portuguese religious architecture, with whitewashed walls and a prominent bell tower.
I expected the traditional colored bars, but in this case, religiosity prevailed over tradition.
“Fonte da pedra” (Stone fountain)
Fonte da Pedra, or Fonte dos Almocreves was built in 1827, featuring a central structure adorned with intricate baroque-style decorations and volutes. The fountain is flanked by two semi-circular walls, painted white with blue accents, and it includes two spouts, and a basin designed for animals to drink from.
São Francisco church
Convent of São Francisco is an expression that generally means Baroque richness, in contrast with the saint’s poverty. In Arraiolos, it seems a little bit different. This convent, dating back to the 17th century has the simple yet elegant architecture, reflecting the regional Franciscan style of the Baroque period. It was damaged during the 1755 earthquake and restored, but I couldn’t enter to check what happened to the Baroque altars.
“Passos da Paixão” chapel
The Passos da Paixão Chapel is a small religious site built in the 18th century and located along the path between the castle and the town. It is one of the twelve that represent the Stations of the Cross, depicting the Passion of Christ (I didn’t see the other, but I believe that I didn’t miss much!)
Nossa Senhora das Dores church
The Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Dores was built in the 18th century, featuring a very simple architectural style, with whitewashed walls and a modest interior.
Monument to the “tapeteira” (carpet worker)
The “Monumento da Tapeteira” is a tribute to the town’s rich tradition of rug-making. Inaugurated on December 23, 2001, this monument honors the skilled artisans, known as “tapeteiras,” who have crafted the famous Arraiolos rugs for centuries.
