Highlights in Penela
The castle that dates back to the 11th century, the traditional architecture including some churches, with evidence to São Miguel. Nearby we may also visit the ruins of Germanelo castle.
Nature lovers can explore the Cascata da Pedra da Ferida, a picturesque waterfall surrounded by lush greenery. The Serra do Sicó provides excellent hiking trails and breathtaking landscapes. Visitors can also discover the Soprador do Carvalho Cave, a fascinating underground experience.
Castle of Penela
The castle has a rich history dating back to the Moorish period in the 9th century. Within the castle complex, there is an Interpretation Center that provides visitors with information about the history, architecture, and its significance. It offers exhibits, displays, and multimedia presentations to enhance the visitor’s understanding of the site.
Pedra Ferida
On the outskirts of the village of Espinhal there is a natural element of great beauty, which is one of the biggest attractions in the region. The waterfall provides a reasonable route in a leafy valley, where the river forms small lakes and waterfalls.
Nearby there is a viewpoint, but it doesn’t even allow you to get an idea of the waterfall, so you have to go down and walk a little. The path is short, but somewhat uneven, requiring some caution with children and people with physical problems.
