Ponta Delgada, the capital, is a very interesting city, and a hub from where you may visit all the island in short trips.
Initially a fishing village in the 15th century, Ponta Delgada became the island’s capital in the following century following an earthquake that destroyed Vila Franca do Campo, the former capital.
Since then, it has not stopped growing and gaining prominence on the national scene, recently with the strong boost of tourism.
Highlights in Ponta Delgada:
The city center is very beautiful, with the famous Portas da Cidade, the fort of S. Brás and the square of Senhor Santo Cristo. The coal cave and pineapple production are curiosities, and there are some museums to visit.
