In the first half of the last century, a gastronomic novelty was developed in the region of Bairrada, which was oven-roasted suckling pig.

Perhaps taking advantage of the location, close to Coimbra, in the national main road, it was in Mealhada that this recipe evolved and established itself, in such a way that today the city and suckling pig are almost synonymous.
