When a village is promoted to city, containing “villa” in the name this one, the baptism becomes difficult. Santa Maria solves the problem, it’s more beautiful, but the Portuguese keep it simple and only accept the last word. To complicate matters, it belongs to the district of Aveiro, and to the metropolitan area of Porto. Don’t worry, it’s worth a visit.
Highlights in Santa Maria da Feira:
The castle, which hosts the annual Medieval Journey, a festival that recreates the Middle Ages with great authenticity. In the modern area we have Europarque – a modern congress center with a varied program of cultural events – and the Visionarium – an interactive science museum. The Paper Museum also deserves special mention.

With construction beginning in the 11th century, the castle of Feira was used for around 500 years, successively being adapted to new resources and defensive solutions.
Then it went from hand to hand, burned down in the 18th century and was classified as a national monument in the 19th century.
It can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday.
Loios convent
Beginning in the 16th century, this imposing complex, on top of a hill, was built in the Mannerist style, with baroque additions.
On the staircase there is an original fountain and an 18th-century cross.
Misericórdia
The church of Misericórdia lis located in the historic center of the city, dating back to 1690. The dome ship collapsed during the 1755 earthquake but was later reconstructed, replacing most Manueline details by other styles, mainly Baroque.
City hall
The City Hall palace, built in 1929, is the most emblematic building in the beautiful Republic Square
