Assisi

Assisi

Overview

Assisi is one of Italy’s most spiritual and atmospheric hill towns, known for its medieval streets, pink‑stone architecture, and deep connection to Saint Francis. Surrounded by olive groves and Umbrian hills, it blends serenity, heritage, and timeless beauty. The atmosphere feels peaceful, contemplative, and unmistakably Italian.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit is from April to October, when mild weather makes walking through the historic center and visiting basilicas enjoyable. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds, while summer brings lively cultural events.

Getting around

Assisi is compact and best explored on foot. The town rises along a hillside, so expect gentle climbs and panoramic viewpoints. Buses connect Assisi with Perugia and nearby Umbrian towns. The train station sits downhill, with local buses linking it to the historic center.

Safety and local etiquette

Assisi is safe and welcoming. Locals value politeness, quiet respect in religious sites, and appreciation for local traditions. Visitors are encouraged to dress appropriately in churches and enjoy the town’s calm rhythm.

Food and water

Umbrian cuisine shines in Assisi: truffles, olive oil, cured meats, handmade pasta, and rustic breads. Restaurants and trattorias offer hearty, traditional dishes. Tap water is safe and excellent. Meals here feel simple, earthy, and rooted in regional produce.

Day trips and excursions

Highlights include the Basilica of Saint Francis, Basilica of Santa Chiara, Rocca Maggiore, and the medieval streets of the old town. Nearby, Spello, Perugia, and Gubbio offer art, history, and Umbrian charm. The surrounding countryside is ideal for hiking and photography.

Essence of Assisi

The essence of Assisi lies in its harmony between spirituality and landscape. Sunlight warms ancient stone, bells echo across the valley, and quiet lanes invite reflection. It is a place where faith meets beauty — serene, intimate, and deeply Italian.

Highlights in Assisi

Known as the birthplace of St. Francis, the city is home to the Basilica of St. Francis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site adorned with stunning frescoes. Visitors can explore the Cathedral of San Rufino, the Basilica of Santa Chiara, and the Temple of Minerva, each offering a glimpse into the town’s deep-rooted past. Strolling through the medieval streets, travelers encounter charming piazzas, artisan shops, and traditional Italian cafés. The Rocca Maggiore, a fortress overlooking the town, provides panoramic views of the Umbrian valley.

Visiting Assisi top attractions – Saint Francis

Assisi
The Best Of Assisi Highlights

In reality I have never visited this city, I just looked at the photos of Tito’s recent visit and decided that I had to go there to do better.

Meanwhile, preparing the visit I read that the basilica of Saint Francis is a UNESCO Heritage site and the top attraction in the city, but there is much more, like San Rufino, Santa Chiara or Minerva temple, and I will not forget it.

It’s on the agenda!
