After many centuries of conflict between the citadel and the lower town built to facilitate the growth of the population while preserving the historic core, and occupations that largely destroyed it.
In the 19th century, it was decided to rebuild what was the largest fortress in Europe. Today, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is the second most visited monument in France, surpassed only by Mont St. Michael.
