Founded in 1350, Ayutthaya was the capital of the Kingdom of Siam for over 400 years, making it the largest city in the world.
In 1767 it was sacked and by the armies of Burma who razed and destroyed most of the city’s many rich monuments.
It was after this sack that Bangkok became the capital, and the ruins of the old city were recovered.
In 1991 this effort was recognized by UNESCO, which declared the site a World Heritage Site.
Located about an hour from Bangkok, Ayutthaia can be visited on a short journey from the capital, or as a stopover on the way to Chiang Mai.
