Near the town of UMM Qais, on a hillside in the far north of Jordan, overlooking the Golan Heights, are the ruins of the ancient city of Gadara.
The city’s historical weight in the Bible, more than the quality of its ruins, despite being appreciable, weighed in on UNESCO’s decision to declare them a World Heritage Site.
The 120 km away from Amman, with a good road, allow a visit from the capital, usually with a stop in Jerash, a tour that is worth doing.
Highlights of Gadara:
The ruins, and the setting, in an area where the weight of history collides with current political disputes.
