From Amman, it is common to take a day trip through the desert to the east, in search of the fortifications and palaces spread throughout it, generally called “Desert castles“.
The buildings are not particularly remarkable, but if you take into account where, how and when (in the 8th century) they were built, you can’t help but be strongly impressed.
On the negative side, the approximately 300 km through the sad landscape of a semi-desert without the beauty of Wadi Rum, for example, can be boring for some.
Highlights of Desert Castles:
Of the half dozen buildings that can be visited, Qasr al-Kharana, Kusayr Amra and Azrak (used in Lawrence of Arabia) deserve special mention.
