Eroding over millions of years, the Colorado River carved out an immense canyon in Arizona, with an average width of 16 km and 1.6 km in depth, along 445 km, now with an artificial lake at each end – Lake Powell upstream, and Lake Mead downstream.
The landscape is overwhelming, with the various layers of rock exposing millions of years of geological history, in a vivid color that is transfigured with the frequent mood swings of the climate.
The Grand Canyon National Park is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has good visiting infrastructure.
