Founded in 1542 by the Spaniard Francisco de Montejo and several Spanish families, Mérida was built on the ruins of the T’HO Mayan population, abandoned by the indigenous people under pressure from the Spanish.
With about a million inhabitants, it is the most populous city in south-eastern Mexico.
In its center you can still see examples of colonial architecture from the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as the period of French influence, in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Around Mérida
With an intense cultural activity, the capital is surrounded by several archaeological explorations, especially Dzibilchaltùn and, a little further, Uxmal.
