One of the leaders of the independence movement in Brazil was a dentist and became known as Tiradentes.
In his honor, the village near his birthplace, at short distance from São João d’el Rei, was named after him.
Highlights in Tiradentes:
The city is an excellent example of Portuguese colonial architecture, such as Parati or Ouro Preto, including the church of Santo António. A short ride on a traditional train, “Maria Fumaça” is a curiosity.
