Congonhas is perhaps the most discreet of the historic cities of Minas Gerais, clearly standing out in comparison with Ouro Preto, Tiradentes and others.
It has, however, a precious asset – the work of Aleijadinho, reproducing the twelve apostles in soapstone, at the entrance to the sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos.

The statues, of course, but you don’t lose anything if you enter the church, and if you take a look at the chapels scattered around the terreiro, the whole of which is a UNESCO world heritage site.
